Arabic · Practice Paper 4 · the mid-term, Units 1–8
The Mid-term · Units 1–8
One win: sit the book's 100-mark mid-term on everything so far, and find out what has stuck from greetings to work. It is the first paper with a listening section, and that section is worth 38 marks: you will need sound.
How the marking works
Each item is marked the moment you answer it, and only a first answer earns the mark. Where the paper wants you to write (a heard word, an answer to a question), the page cannot read your handwriting: write or say your answer, open the model, and rate yourself honestly. In the listening section, press 🔊, listen (twice at most, as in a real exam), and answer before you open anything; what was said is kept behind a fold below each exercise. Reload the page for a clean paper.
Two places where the book lets you down
Listening (ب): the script at the back stops after its second statement, so questions ٥ to ٧ ask about a teacher the recording never mentions. Structures (د) item ٣: the sentence has no visible error as printed. Both are explained where you meet them, and both are still worth their mark: the page tells you how to take it.

1. Read the paper first
Six instructions are new on this paper, all of them in the listening section, plus two in the grammar section. Hear them once and know what each asks.
| On the paper | It asks | 🔊 |
|---|---|---|
| اِسْتَمِعْ إِلى السُّؤالِ ثُمَّ اخْتَرِ الجَوابَ | listen to the question, then choose the answer | |
| اِسْتَمِعْ إِلى العِبارَةِ ثُمَّ اكْتُبِ الجَوابَ الصَّحيحَ | listen to the statement, then write the right answer | |
| اُكْتُبِ الكَلِمَةَ الَّتي تَسْمَعُها | write the word you hear | |
| اِسْتَمِعْ واخْتَرِ الكَلِمَةَ الصَّحيحَةَ | listen, and choose the right word | |
| اِسْتَمِعْ إِلى الحِوارِ ثُمَّ أَجِبْ بِنَعَمْ أَوْ بِلا | listen to the dialogue, then answer yes or no | |
| اُكْتُبِ العِبارَةَ الَّتي تَسْمَعُها | write the sentence you hear | |
| اِخْتَرْ أَداةَ الاِسْتِفْهامِ المُناسِبَةَ | choose the right question word | |
| ضَعْ عَلامَةَ (✓) بِجانِبِ الجُمْلَةِ الصَّحيحَةِ | tick the correct sentence (and X the wrong one) |
Words on this paper that no unit has taught beyond the book
The mid-term uses a handful of words that are on no Unit 1–8 page, on no unit word list, and not in the book's supporting list. Read them here once so they do not cost you a mark; none is carded, none is drilled.
- أَبْيَض · أَسْوَد white · black (two colours, in a group to add to)
- فَوْقَ · شِمال above · left (two place words, the same)
- ثَوْب a garment, the long robe men wear · مَجَلَّة a magazine
- البَيْض eggs · الحَلْوى sweets (this one is in the supporting list)
- يَتَناوَلُ he has (a meal) · قَبْلَ before, the partner of بَعْدَ
2. أَوَّلاً: فَهْمُ المَسْموع · Listening, 38 marks
(أ) اِسْتَمِعْ إِلى السُّؤالِ ثُمَّ اخْتَرِ الجَوابَ.
– / 5Press 🔊 to hear the question, then tap the answer that fits it. Every wrong answer is a real sentence that answers a different question: you are listening for the question word.
Question ١
- آكُلُ السَّمَكَ والسَّلَطَةَ.
- نَعَمْ. في الغَداءِ.
- الفاكِهَةُ عَلى المائِدَةِ.
Question ٢
- آكُلُ العِنَبَ.
- لا، أُفَضِّلُ الشّايَ.
- الحَليبُ عَلى المائِدَةِ.
Question ٣
- يُصَلّي أَحْمَدُ الفَجْرَ.
- هُوَ ذاهِبٌ إِلى البَيْتِ.
- في شَقَّةٍ.
Question ٤
- أَنا سُعودِيَّةٌ.
- أَدْرُسُ في كُلِّيَّةِ الطِّبِّ.
- اِسْمي إِلْهام.
Question ٥
- أَعْمَلُ سَبْعَ ساعاتٍ.
- أَعْمَلُ في الشَّرِكَةِ.
- أَعْمَلُ مُهَنْدِساً.
what was asked
١ ماذا تَأْكُلُ في الغَداءِ؟ · ٢ هَلْ تَشْرَبُ القَهْوَةَ؟ · ٣ أَيْنَ يَسْكُنُ أَحْمَدُ؟ · ٤ في أَيِّ كُلِّيَّةٍ تَدْرُسينَ؟ · ٥ كَمْ ساعَةً تَعْمَلُ في اليَوْمِ؟
Five units in five questions: food (Unit 5), housing (3), study (7), work (8). Number ٥ is the hardest, because all three options start أَعْمَلُ: only كَمْ picks the hours.
(ب) اِسْتَمِعْ إِلى العِبارَةِ ثُمَّ اكْتُبِ الجَوابَ الصَّحيحَ.
– / 8Hear the two statements (each as often as you need, the exam would allow two), then answer the eight printed questions aloud or on paper, open the model answer, and rate yourself.
statement one · statement two
Questions ٥ to ٧ have no recording
The script at the back of the book (p.256) stops in the middle of its second statement's closing bracket, and nothing about مُحَمَّد is ever printed. Questions ٥ to ٧ ask about him: a teacher, his school stage, how he gets to school. Answer them as a speaking drill: say a correct full sentence in the question's frame, and count it right if it is. In class, your teacher has the real text.
١- أَيْنَ تَعْمَلُ؟
أَعْمَلُ في المُسْتَشْفى. (statement one)
Not in the book's recording. The questions after it make him a teacher: مُحَمَّدٌ مُدَرِّسٌ is the frame. Right if your sentence is correct.
٦- في أَيِّ مَرْحَلَةٍ يُدَرِّسُ؟
Not in the recording. The frame: يُدَرِّسُ في المَرْحَلَةِ الاِبْتِدائِيَّةِ (or المُتَوَسِّطَةِ). Note يُدَرِّسُ, teaches.
٧- كَيْفَ يَذْهَبُ إِلى المَدْرَسَةِ؟
Not in the recording. The frame: يَذْهَبُ إِلى المَدْرَسَةِ بِالسَّيّارَةِ (or بِالحافِلَةِ).
٨- كَمْ ساعَةً يَعْمَلُ في اليَوْمِ؟
يَعْمَلُ سِتَّ ساعاتٍ في اليَوْمِ. That is Ahmad's figure, the only one recorded; if the question meant Muhammad, it has no source either.
what was said
أَعْمَلُ في المُسْتَشْفى. · أَحْمَدُ مُهَنْدِسٌ يَعْمَلُ في شَرِكَةٍ كَبيرَةٍ، يَذْهَبُ إِلى الشَّرِكَةِ بِالحافِلَةِ، ويَعْمَلُ سِتَّ ساعاتٍ في اليَوْمِ.
The second is Unit 8's Mahmoud portrait (p.209) with a new name and six hours instead of seven.
(ج) اُكْتُبِ الكَلِمَةَ الَّتي تَسْمَعُها.
– / 8Hear each word and write it down. These are sound drills, not vocabulary: most are words the course does not use, chosen for one letter that is easy to mishear. The mark is for that letter. Open the answer only after you have written.
Word ١
كَرَّ · the first letter is ك, not ق
Word ٢
عليم · it opens on ع, not أ
Word ٣
حاد · ح, not ه
Word ٤
ماط · it ends on ط, not ت
Word ٥
كاهل · ك and ه (not ح)
Word ٦
قال · ق, not ك: the one common word in the set, “he said”
Word ٧
سعل · س (not ص) and ع
Word ٨
حرص · ح and ص (not س)
about these words
The script prints them unvocalised (only كَرَّ carries marks), and the audio reads them one plausible way. If your browser's voice blurs a pair such as س / ص, that is the voice, not your ear: the units' own الأَصْوات pages are where the book trains these sounds, and this course has left those pages to the class.
(د) اِسْتَمِعْ واخْتَرِ الكَلِمَةَ الصَّحيحَةَ.
– / 8Each pair differs in one sound. Hear the word, tap the one you heard.
Pair ١
- كانَ
- خانَ
Pair ٢
- هَوى
- حَوى
Pair ٣
- كُل
- قُل
Pair ٤
- عَسى
- عَصى
Pair ٥
- أَلَم
- عَلَم
Pair ٦
- تابَ
- طابَ
Pair ٧
- قَرَّ
- غَرَّ
Pair ٨
- فِتْنَة
- فِطْنَة
what was said, and the sound in each pair
– / 5Hear the whole dialogue, then decide each printed statement. The man answering is the “I” of every statement.
the dialogue
what was said
The key word is قَبْلَ, “before”, which no unit has taught: he wakes before the dawn prayer, so ١ is yes (that is early, though he never says مُبَكِّراً) and ٢ is no. This is Unit 4's day off retold, with one line turned round: Unit 4's man said لا أَنامُ بَعْدَ الصَّلاةِ; this one goes back to sleep.
(و) اُكْتُبِ العِبارَةَ الَّتي تَسْمَعُها.
– / 4Hear each sentence, write it down in full, then compare.
Sentence ١
أَحْمَدُ مُهَنْدِسٌ.
Sentence ٢
أَسْتَيْقِظُ مُبَكِّراً.
Sentence ٣
فاطِمَةُ تَقْرَأُ القُرْآنَ.
Sentence ٤
يَذْهَبُ إِلى المَدْرَسَةِ.
3. ثانِياً: القِراءَة والمُفْرَدات · Reading & vocabulary, 29 marks
(أ) اِقْرَأِ الفِقْرَةَ، ثُمَّ أَجِبْ عَنِ الأَسْئِلَةِ الَّتي تَليها.
– / 4Read the two sentences aloud, then answer each question in a full sentence before you open the model.
meaning
Hassan lives in a flat in the Airport district. And Ahmad lives in a house in the University district. Unit 3's two districts, word for word.

– / 6Unit 5's fat man, now with clock times. Read it aloud, then answer.
meaning
Uthman is very fat. He eats four meals a day: breakfast at six in the morning, lunch at one in the afternoon, and dinner at seven in the evening. And he eats a meal after breakfast and before lunch. Uthman loves food: at breakfast he eats fish and eggs, at lunch meat and chicken, and before lunch he eats sweets and drinks tea, then coffee.
New here, for reading only: البَيْض eggs, الحَلْوى sweets, قَبْلَ before, and in the questions يَتَناوَلُ, “he has (a meal)”. مَساءً is Unit 7's evening said the way صَباحاً is. The page prints جِداً without its shadda; the audio says جِدّاً, as Unit 5 does.
١- كَمْ وَجْبَةً يَأْكُلُ عُثْمانُ في اليَوْمِ؟
يَأْكُلُ أَرْبَعَ وَجَباتٍ في اليَوْمِ.
٢- مَتى يَتَناوَلُ الوَجْبَةَ الأولى؟
السّاعَةَ السّادِسَةَ صَباحاً. (the first meal, breakfast)
٣- مَتى يَتَناوَلُ العَشاءَ؟
السّاعَةَ السّابِعَةَ مَساءً.
٤- ماذا يُحِبُّ عُثْمانُ؟

(د) أَضِفْ كَلِمَتَيْنِ لِكُلِّ مَجْموعَةٍ.
– / 9Add two words to each group: one mark a group, as Exam 1 marked it. Say both aloud, then open the model and rate yourself. The first two groups ask for words the course has not taught; the model answer says what you can use.
١- أَلْوانٌ: أَبْيَضُ – أَسْوَدُ – ...... – ......
Colours beyond the book: no colour is on any Unit 1–8 page or list. The usual answers are أَحْمَرُ · أَخْضَرُ · أَزْرَقُ · أَصْفَرُ (red, green, blue, yellow). If you could not name two, that is the book's gap, not yours.
٢- ظُروفٌ: فَوْقَ – شِمالَ – ...... – ......
Place and time words. You have four: بِجانِبِ (Unit 6), بَعْدَ · عِنْدَ (Unit 4), الآنَ (Unit 7). فَوْقَ above and شِمال left are beyond the book.
٣- أَعْدادٌ: ثالِثٌ – رابِعٌ – ...... – ......
Ranking words: خامِسٌ · سادِسٌ · سابِعٌ · ثامِنٌ · تاسِعٌ · عاشِرٌ (or أَوَّلُ · ثانٍ)
٤- أَفْعالٌ: يَذْهَبُ – يُشاهِدُ – ...... – ......
Any he-form: يَقْرَأُ · يَكْتُبُ · يَأْكُلُ · يَعْمَلُ · يَدْرُسُ · يَسْكُنُ · يُصَلّي
٥- جِنْسِيّاتٌ: باكِسْتانِيٌّ – سورِيٌّ – ...... – ......
Unit 1's nationalities: مِصْرِيٌّ · سُعودِيٌّ (and any other country with ـِيٌّ)
Structures & grammar, 33 marks
(أ) اِخْتَرْ أَداةَ الاِسْتِفْهامِ المُناسِبَةَ لِكُلِّ سُؤالٍ مِمّا يَلي.
– / 10Ten question words, ten questions, each word used once. The same ten chips are under every gap.
مِنْ أَيْنَ · مَتى · لِماذا · كَيْفَ · ما · مَنْ · كَمْ · أَيْنَ · في أَيِّ · هَلْ
“How are you?”
___ حالُكَ؟
كَيْفَ
Unit 1's greeting: كَيْفَ حالُكَ؟
“What is your name?”
___ اسْمُكَ؟
ما
ما before a noun; ماذا is the one before a verb.
“Why do you wake up late?”
___ تَسْتَيْقِظُ مُتَأَخِّراً؟
لِماذا
The one question word left that fits a sentence already holding its time (مُتَأَخِّراً).
“When does the school year end?”
___ يَنْتَهي العامُ الدِّراسِيُّ؟
مَتى
Unit 7's timetable: مَتى يَنْتَهي العامُ الدِّراسِيُّ؟ في شَهْرِ رَمَضانَ.
“Where is the book?”
___ الكِتابُ؟
أَيْنَ
أَيْنَ + a definite noun, no verb needed, like Unit 7's أَيْنَ المُعَلِّمُ؟
“Which faculty do you (f) study at?”
___ كُلِّيَّةٍ تَدْرُسينَ؟
في أَيِّ
Unit 7 dialogue 2, word for word. The -in on كُلِّيَّةٍ needs a word in front that takes it.
“How many periods do you study a day?”
___ حِصَّةً تَدْرُسُ في اليَوْمِ؟
كَمْ
The singular in -an (حِصَّةً) is كَمْ's own shape.
“Is this a book?”
___ هَذا كِتابٌ؟
هَلْ
A whole sentence turned into a yes/no question.
“Where are you from?”
___ أَنْتَ؟
مِنْ أَيْنَ
Unit 1: مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ؟ On its own مَنْ أَنْتَ؟ “who are you?” would also be Arabic, but مَنْ belongs to item ١٠.
“Who is this?”
___ هَذا؟
مَنْ
Unit 2 asks it about a photograph: مَنْ هَذا؟
(ب) ضَعْ عَلامَةَ (✓) بِجانِبِ الجُمْلَةِ الصَّحيحَةِ وعَلامَةَ (X) بِجانِبِ الخَطَأِ.
– / 7Each row has one right sentence and one wrong one. Tap the right one; the other gets its X.
Row ١
- هَلْ أَنْتَ باكِسْتان؟
- هَلْ أَنْتَ باكِسْتانِيٌّ؟
Row ٢
- هَذا أَخي. هُوَ مُدَرِّسٌ.
- هَذا أَخي. هِيَ مُدَرِّسٌ.
Row ٣
- هَذِهِ الثَّوْبُ يا سَعيدُ.
- هَذا الثَّوْبُ يا سَعيدُ.
Row ٤
- يا مُحَمَّدُ! في أَيِّ جامِعَةٍ تَدْرُسينَ؟
- يا مُحَمَّدُ! في أَيِّ جامِعَةٍ تَدْرُسُ؟
Row ٥
- الجامِعَةُ بَعيدَةٌ عَنِ البَيْتِ.
- الجامِعَةُ بَعيدٌ عَنِ البَيْتِ.
Row ٦
- لي خَمْسَةُ طِفْلٍ.
- لي خَمْسَةُ أَطْفالٍ.
Row ٧
- لِماذا أَنْتَ مُسافِرٌ إِلى مَكَّةَ؟
- لِماذا أَنْتِ مُسافِرٌ إِلى مَكَّةَ؟
the agreement in each row
١ a person takes the nisba, not the country (Unit 1) · ٢ a brother is هُوَ · ٣ ثَوْب is a he-noun, so هَذا · ٤ Muhammad is a man: no ـينَ · ٥ الجامِعَة is a she-noun, so بَعيدَةٌ (Unit 7) · ٦ after five, a plural (Unit 8) · ٧ مُسافِرٌ goes with أَنْتَ; with أَنْتِ it would be مُسافِرَةٌ (Unit 6).
(ج) اُكْتُبِ الفِعْلَ الصَّحيحَ مِمّا بَيْنَ القَوْسَيْنِ.
– / 6Write the right verb from the brackets. Both verbs are real and rightly formed; only one makes sense.
“I do my ablution for the Friday prayer.”
___ لِصَلاةِ الجُمُعَةِ.
أَتَوَضَّأُ
لِـ “for”: you wash for the prayer. You do not pray for the prayer. Unit 2's يَتَوَضَّأُ in the I-form.
“Ali is eating the food now.”
عَلِيٌّ ___ الطَّعامَ الآنَ.
يَأْكُلُ
Food is eaten; Unit 5.
“My friend is waiting for the bus.”
صَديقي ___ الحافِلَةَ.
يَنْتَظِرُ
الحافِلَةَ with -a is the thing waited for. يَذْهَبُ would need إِلى or بِـ.
“When does study end?”
مَتى ___ الدِّراسَةُ؟
تَنْتَهي
الدِّراسَةُ is the subject (-u); study does not study. تَـ because الدِّراسَة is a she-noun.
“Do you like your work?”
هَلْ ___ عَمَلَكَ؟
تُحِبُّ
Unit 8's closing line, every dialogue.
“Ali lives in the Airport district.”
عَلِيٌّ ___ في حَيِّ المَطارِ.
يَسْكُنُ
Unit 3's frame: أَسْكُنُ في … في حَيِّ …
(د) صَحِّحِ الأَخْطاءَ.
– / 6Each sentence plants one wrong word: tap it, then open the fixes and say each sentence right. Item ٣ is the exception: read its note before you answer.
Item ٣ has no error as printed
كَيْفَ حالُك أَنْتَ؟ leaves the kāf of حالُك without a vowel and prints أَنْتَ for a man. Read حالُكَ أَنْتَ, the sentence is right. The paper almost certainly meant one of the two “you” words to be the other gender (حالُكِ أَنْتَ, or حالُكَ أَنْتِ), and a mark fell off in printing. So the honest answer, and the one that earns the mark here, is “no error as printed”.

· ٣ (as printed) · ٤ نَعَمْ. أَنا باكِسْتانِيٌّ. · ٥ هَذا أَخي. هُوَ مُدَرِّسٌ. · ٦ ماذا سَتَفْعَلينَ يا فاطِمَةُ؟
١ Saʿīda is a woman, and تُصَلّي already says so · ٢ ابْنَتُهُ is a she-noun · ٤ a person is the nisba, not the country · ٥ a brother is a مُدَرِّس · ٦ a woman gets ـينَ, and سَـ does not change that. Every one is an agreement point from Units 1, 2 and 4.
(هـ) أَكْمِلِ الجُمَلَ التّالِيَةَ بِأَداةِ الاِسْتِفْهامِ المُناسِبَةِ مِمّا يَلي.
– / 4Four question words, four questions, each used once.
مَتى · كَيْفَ · هَلْ · أَيْنَ
“When do you go to school?”
___ تَذْهَبُ إِلى المَدْرَسَةِ؟
مَتى
أَيْنَ cannot open it: إِلى المَدْرَسَةِ already says where. كَيْفَ and هَلْ are needed below.
“Where do you pray fajr?”
___ تُصَلّي الفَجْرَ؟
أَيْنَ
The listening dialogue's own question: أَيْنَ تُصَلّي الفَجْرَ؟ أُصَلّي في المَسْجِدِ.
“How are you?”
___ حالُكَ؟
كَيْفَ
Unit 1.
“Are you Syrian?”
___ أَنْتَ سورِيٌّ؟
هَلْ
A yes/no question about nationality: Unit 1's هَلْ أَنْتَ مِصْرِيٌّ؟

Where a lost mark sends you:
- Listening (أ, ب, هـ). The Unit 8, Unit 5 and Unit 4 readers, played with your eyes shut: press 🔊 before you read each line.
- Listening (ج, د, و). These are sound drills; the units' own الأَصْوات pages, done in class, are where the book trains them.
- Reading (أ, ب). Lesson 3 for the districts, Lesson 5 for the meals, Numbers for the clock.
- Odd one out and add two words. The flashcard decks, meaning → Arabic, Units 2, 3 and 8 above all.
- Question words (أ, هـ). The reference sheet, §2.
- Right or wrong sentence, and the errors (ب, د). The agreement machine, reference sheet §3; for the ـينَ ending, Lesson 4.
- The right verb (ج). The verbs in context: Lesson 6 and Lesson 8.
Which section cost you most: listening, reading and words, or grammar? Which page fixes it?
Your own answer; write it down, that is next session's plan. Listening is 38 of the 100 marks, so if that section leaked, the readers with the text hidden are the cheapest fix.
6. Where this came from
- The textbook (Al-Arabiyyah Bayna Yadayk, Book 1 Part 1), الاِخْتِبارُ
النِّصْفِيُّ (الوَحَداتُ ١-٨), book pp.217–222, and its listening texts,
نُصوصُ فَهْمِ المَسْموعِ لِلاِخْتِبارِ النِّصْفِيِّ, pp.256–257, read from
the book PDF in your library. Transcribed 2026-10-05 with a worked key, marked
[key]because the book prints none. Marks are the printed tick-box numbers; p.222 ends «مَجْموعُ الدَّرَجاتِ = ١٠٠ دَرَجَة». - Every content word checked against the eight units' word sets and transcriptions and the book's own per-unit word lists (pp.235–236). The words on no unit page or list (the colours, فَوْقَ، شِمال، ثَوْب، مَجَلَّة، البَيْض، يَتَناوَلُ، قَبْلَ) are glossed above for recognition; الحَلْوى is in the book's supporting list (p.227).
- Two slips, both recorded in the library catalogue: the listening script for (ب) stops short on p.256, and item ٣ of (د) has no visible error on p.222. The way each is marked here is this page's decision, stated where you meet it.
- The listening audio is your browser's Arabic voice reading the book's scripts, with vowels added from the units' pages. It is not the book's recording.
A mid-term is a long sitting. Do the listening once with nothing open, then the rest; note the sections that leaked, revise those pages, and sit it again after a few days. The review test just before it is Exam 3. Anything unclear? Bring it to your teacher, in class.
